How area pricing works

Area pricing multiplies width by height to get a surface area, then applies a rate per unit of that area. In imperial the calculator divides by 144 to convert square inches to square feet; in metric it divides by 10,000 to convert square centimetres to square metres. Because the rate is an input rather than a fixed list, it works for any material at any price.

Who sells by area

Wallpaper and wall murals, vinyl and window film, glass and mirrors, upholstery fabric, artificial turf, acrylic and MDF panels, printed signage, and flooring. Anything cut to a customer's measurements rather than sold in fixed variants.

Why fixed variants lose you orders

A Shopify variant list can only hold so many size combinations before it becomes unusable. Merchants selling made-to-measure goods either publish a huge, confusing variant matrix or ask customers to request a quote by email — and quote requests convert far worse than a price shown on the page. An area calculator gives an exact figure at the moment of interest.

Waste and overage

Most made-to-measure trades add an overage percentage to cover trimming and pattern matching — 10% is a common default, more for patterned material that has to be matched across drops. The calculator adds it to the area before pricing, and shows the area you actually need to order alongside the total. A production build usually also enforces a minimum order value so tiny cuts stay profitable.

Frequently asked questions

Is this area price calculator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no signup, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

Can I switch between imperial and metric?

Yes. The units toggle at the top switches every input between inches and centimetres, and swaps the rate between per square foot and per square metre.

How do I calculate price per square foot?

Multiply width in inches by height in inches, divide by 144 to get square feet, then multiply by your rate per square foot. The calculator does all three steps as you type.

Can this go on my own Shopify product page?

Yes — that is exactly what we build. The calculator replaces or sits alongside your variant selector, prices the customer's exact dimensions, and adds the correct line item to the cart.
