The six sizing systems

US and UK sizes both run on the barleycorn — a third of an inch per size — but start from different zero points, so a UK size runs roughly a half size below the men's US equivalent and two sizes below the women's. EU sizes use the Paris point, two thirds of a centimetre per size. Japanese sizes are simply foot length in centimetres, Korean sizes the same measurement in millimetres, and Australian sizing follows UK for men and US for women.

Men's and women's sizes are not the same scale

The gender toggle matters. In US sizing a women's size runs about 1.5 sizes above the men's number for the same physical shoe, so a women's 9 is roughly a men's 7.5. EU sizing is nominally unisex but lasts still differ in width and volume, which is why the same EU number can fit differently across men's and women's ranges.

Measure your foot rather than trusting your usual size

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure the distance in centimetres. Do it late in the day, when feet are at their largest, and measure both feet — most people have one slightly longer. Size to the larger foot.

Conversions are approximate by nature

There is no international standard that binds these systems together, and every manufacturer builds on its own lasts. A converted size is the right size to try first, not a guarantee. Where a brand publishes a foot-length chart in centimetres, that is always more reliable than a converted number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a US 9 in UK sizes?

A men's US 9 is a UK 8.5. A women's US 9 is a UK 7. Select the correct gender before converting, because the two scales are offset differently.

Are EU shoe sizes the same for men and women?

The EU scale is nominally unisex, so the same number is used for both. The lasts still differ in width and volume, so try the shoe where you can.

How do Japanese shoe sizes work?

Japanese sizes are the length of your foot in centimetres. A 26 means a 26 cm foot, which makes them the easiest system to match by measuring.

Why do brands fit differently at the same size?

Each manufacturer builds shoes on its own last, so width, toe shape and volume vary even when the stated size matches. Converted sizes are a starting point.
