How buy-now-pay-later splits work

The common 'pay in 4' structure divides the total into four equal payments, the first taken at checkout and the rest every two weeks, with no interest to the shopper when payments are made on time. Longer plans of 6 or 12 monthly payments are also offered, and those often do carry interest depending on the provider, the amount and the shopper's credit assessment.

Why the per-payment figure matters on a product page

A price shown as four payments of $25 reads very differently from $100, particularly on higher-value items. Showing the split amount next to the price is one of the most common conversion improvements on stores selling in the $100–$1,000 range, which is why every major provider supplies a messaging component for exactly this.

What the merchant pays

Interest-free to the shopper is not free to the store. Providers typically charge the merchant a percentage of the order plus a fixed fee, often meaningfully above standard card processing. That cost is usually justified by higher conversion and higher average order value, but it is worth measuring rather than assuming.

Presenting it honestly

Financial promotion rules in several markets govern how instalment options can be advertised. Show the total price as prominently as the instalment figure, state the number of payments, and make clear whether interest applies. This calculator models a simple interest-free split — real plans vary by provider and by shopper.

Frequently asked questions

Is pay in 4 really interest free?

For the shopper, typically yes, provided every payment is made on time. Late payments can attract fees, and longer plans of 6 or 12 months often do carry interest.

How do I calculate my monthly payment?

Divide the total price by the number of payments. This calculator does it instantly for 4, 6 and 12 way splits.

Does this include interest or fees?

No. It models a straight interest-free split. Actual costs depend on the provider, the amount and the shopper's credit assessment.

Can you add this to my Shopify product page?

Yes. We build instalment messaging into product pages and cart drawers, wired to whichever provider you use — Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay or Shop Pay Installments.
